We all have an image of physiotherapy - usually it looks like exercises and stretches, or someone laying face down having their injury "worked on".

Physio for kids usually looks very different, incorporating play into the process makes it more engaging, enjoyable, and effective.

What's the Process?
1. Compare to age-appropriate: kids develop skills at different times and there is a huge range of normal, but step 1 is evaluating if any skills aren't in this normal range - this is where we get to work.
2. Analyse the biomechanics of that skills, and work out why it hasn't developed yet: A funky running pattern might come from hip weakness. Delayed walking might come from low muscle tone. Struggles with soccer kicking might be from reduced single leg balance.
3. Work on that weakness: pick an exercise or two that will target the specific issue. Fix the cause and the skill will get easier!
4. Take that exercise and make it fun: This is the magic of play-based physiotherapy for kids.
By integrating play into physiotherapy sessions, therapists can create a positive and dynamic environment that promotes progress. Everyone is more likely to stay committed to their treatment plans when they are actively engaged and having fun. Ultimately, the power of play in physiotherapy can transform the rehabilitation experience into a journey of growth, resilience, and joy.
